And when these allergens come in contact with the body, they trigger an antibody response. These antibodies responses result in the release of histamine which causes inflammation in the body. Inflammation is basically redness and swelling of sin which is quite irritating and uncomfortable. Examples of common allergens are pollen, foods, and mold.

Well, most allergens cause allergies that are not too severe and mild to moderate that do not cause major problems. However, a small number of cases have been found in which some people have experienced a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis is caused by allergens that can be found in food, insects, and medications and it requires immediate life-saving medication. 

We live in an environment where animals are treated as family members and we also plant a variety of flowers at our home but most of them can become a source for allergens, the triggers of allergic reactions. Therefore it’s necessary to know- What are symptoms and signs of reactions to indoor allergens?

Allergens that are present in our surroundings at our home are classified as indoor allergens and they can cause some allergic rhinitis like nasal congestion, runny nose, watering of the eyes, sneezing, and postnasal drip.  Indoor allergens can be found in

a number of different substances, ranging from fabrics to home dust, Cockroaches, Cat dander, Dog dander, Pet rodents, Mold spores, horsehair, houseplants, etc. 

House dust is a mixture of diverse substances that can cause allergies. House dust is composed of a number of natural substances, including dried food particles, mold spores, pollen, fabric fibers, animal dander, and insect parts, especially those of dust mites and cockroaches. However, particles and debris from dust mites are the major source of allergens in dust. As is the case with other allergens, these particles contain proteins that are small enough to become airborne and inhaled.

Ways To Reduce Allergens In Your Home

If you are thinking about keeping your home safe from allergens then the first and foremost thing you must do is to prevent your home from dust mites. Dust mites are basically a type of microorganism, you can not see them with naked eyes as they are microscopic, insect-like pests that commonly live in house dust. Dust mites generally feed on flakes of dead skin, or dander, that are shed by people and pets. These microscopic organisms act as a big source of allergens and can result in various types of allergies and asthma. 

To control dust mites you should Keep surfaces in your home clean and uncluttered as Dust mites are generally found in mattresses, bedding, upholstered furniture, carpets, and curtains in your home. But no matter how much you clean or try to keep your home clean these creatures are so small that they can not be completely eliminated. Thus you should follow some additional dust mite prevention tips.

  • You should use your air conditioner properly so that you would be able to maintain humidity levels at, or below, 50 percent.
  • Use impermeable cushion and pillow covers and if possible try to cover your mattress with dust-proof covers.
  • Wash all your bed sheets and covers and if possible blankets once a week in hot water.
  • Use a damp mop or rag to remove dust. Never use a dry cloth, as it stirs up allergens.
  • Do not keep your food open always keep them closed.
  • Use tight-lidded containers to keep the garbage.
  • Do not keep dirty dishes, food packages, or pet food and in the open on countertops or floors.
  • After eating was the utensils immediately do not procrastinate.
  • Keep washing the kitchen floor at least once a week.

Some other simple ways to reduce allergens in your home

1. Keep Your Bedding Clean:

  • Use impermeable cushion and pillow covers and if possible try to cover your mattress with dust-proof covers. As they are one of the major places where you can find allergens so a dust cover is a must-have accessory for your mattress and other beddings. 
  • Also do not forget to clean your headboard and your bed frame. As they are the prime nesting place for dust and dust mites.
  • Try to wash your bedsheets and pillow covers in hot water at least once a week.

2. Vacuum your home once or twice a week is also a great way to prevent allergens as vacuuming helps to keep them low. 

3. Using a good-quality doormat is useful as it can help to prevent a huge amount of allergens from entering the home.

4. Minimize The Unwanted Gaps: Small gaps in doors or windows can bring quite a few allergens inside the house so prevent unwelcome particles from entering your home by sealing unnecessary gaps. 

5. Do Not Choose Toxic Cleaning Products: A Toxic cleaning product can create airborne particles that encourage dust, and thus increase the allergens thus make sure to check the labels when buying cleaning products and always choose non-toxic products.

6. Use An Air Purifier: Using an air purifier is one of the best solutions you can use to prevent allergens as using an air purifier in your home, which is specially designed to remove dust and airborne particles will reduce the amount of dust produced.
